A new survey appears to support Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke’s push for a mandatory buyback of semi-automatic weapons such as AR-15s and AK-47s, the most popular guns in the world.

Scott Rasmussen just posted results of his latest poll and found that 51% of voters at least somewhat favor a mandatory buyback while 36% are opposed. https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wash ... -of-ar-15s

I know a lot of gun owners as I live in a rural area. So far, everyone I know supports mandatory buyback of SA weapons mainly because they don't, or wouldn't, purchase such guns and don't see a need for them.

I'm not a fan of the word "mandatory".

He'll never get that to pass. If he wants to try, the best he could do is use gel dummies to show what these guns are capable of doing. However, he would also need to use other guns that are not semi-automatic to show their capabilities. That is, if he really wants to make a point.

But I'm still the winner! They lied! They cheated! They stole the election!

Honestly, if he wants it to pass all he has to do is change mandatory to voluntary. It won't get all of them (which mandatory wouldn't either), but it will get quite a bit and it would be a start. Pass a law that those who own them are grandfathered in and are allowed to own them, however, they would not be allowed to sell or give or pass them down without the new owner being vetted.

That should be the case for all gun transfers. No one should be able to obtain and own a gun without background checks.

There is no reason for anybody to even own an assault rifle. I support a buy back for those weapons. I also support a ban.

I’m with the majority here. There’s absolutely no need for any private citizen to own that kind of firearm. That’s not for protection, the name says it all: it’s an assault weapon.

If anyone says those are for protection, they are not. And assault weapons are already highly restricted from civilians.

Not shockingly, there were only 1,000 people surveyed and there is a 3.1% margin of error.

It’s interesting how this OP opinion piece flipped the survey results around and focused on this 51% number when Rasmussen didn’t, rather listing it as a secondary data finding.

This is why I hate polls and don’t believe them. 1,000 people cannot speak for 350 million.

And it’s also interesting how the OP talks about AR-15s and AKs but posters immediately flip the conversation to Assault Weapons.
