During a meeting in which tempers flared and community members argued over the merits of school police, Chicago's Board of Education voted Thursday to eliminate all school police officers by the next academic year and create a new “holistic” school safety policy.

Good! Invest in nurses, social workers, psychologists for schools.

Have they stopped them yet? The thing is, social workers nurses, and psychologists are better at recognizing troubled kids and intervening BEFORE they become school shooters, with the added bonus of not criminalizing black and brown kids.

Maybe the parents should recognize this first!

Wouldn’t surprise me. The stories I’ve heard from Chicago show that they want no police and no rule of law 🤷‍♀️

Not every child is blessed with loving and attentive parents.

This doesn’t really seem like it will be a major change - as of now, only 39 of 151 high schools (plus hundreds of elementary/middle schools) have an SRO on staff, and the police have said they’ll still maintain a presence outside the buildings.

In theory that frees up $10million for other education oriented initiatives, with the police just transitioning to working outside and responding inside as needed.

Unfortunately this is so true. Parents SHOULD recognize this first, but sadly that does not always happen.
I mean did we not just see what happened with the Crumbley parents’ lack of parenting?

On a personal note- I’ve had parent’s of students literally tell me that during the school day their child is MY problem, not theirs.

So yes, in a perfect wonderful ideal world all kids would have loving and attentive parents. But that doesn’t happen. That’s when teachers, guidance counselors, social workers, school psychologists, nurses, etc come in. There needs to be more funding and emphasis for those resources to intervene BEFORE a student shoots up a school.

The SRO in Parkland did absolutely nothing to stop Cruz at MSD. He hid. And a jury found him not guilty of any wrongdoing. Uvalde cops? Same.
