McConnell Calls For Cutting Government Programs To Deal With ‘Disturbing’ Debt
JOSE LUIS MAGANA/AFP

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) called on Congress to rein in major government programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security in order to slow America’s spiraling national debt on Tuesday, ignoring the fact the tax plan he recently passed has further grown that number.

“It’s very disturbing, and it’s driven by the three big entitlement programs that are very popular: Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid. That’s 70 percent of what we spend every year,” he said on Bloomberg News Tuesday when asked about the national debt. “There’s been a bipartisan reluctance to tackle entitlement changes because of the popularity of those programs. Hopefully at some point here we’ll get serious about this. We haven’t been yet.”

McConnell’s comments give Democrats more fodder for an argument that they’ve been making in campaigns across the map: That the GOP will ultimately try to pay for its tax cuts by slashing social programs.

“We are totally confident this is a revenue-neutral bill and probably a revenue producer” - Mitch McConnell on the tax bill December 2017

So they need to eliminate the huge tax cuts for billionaires.!!!
We’re going to be so in debt because of Trump and his mistakes.
He really doesn't know how to manage the economy . He just knew how to declare bankruptcy as a business man before he entered the White House!

The Republicans are broken records. Like he hasn't been around for 100 years already and doesn't know the cycle. Republicans reduce taxes, increase the military, the deficit grows, they want to take it out of people's social security and health care benefits. Broken record over and over.

We pay into social security. It's ours, not theirs to do as they wish because they can't leave shit well enough alone. For many disabled and seniors, it is their only income.

Start with taking away those tax cuts to the wealthy and corporations.

Maybe the GOP just needs to admit they want us to just die off and disappear.

McConnell's call to cut money from Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid is a disgrace. Right after giving huge tax breaks to big corporations and the wealthiest in society too. Right after giving those tax cuts, of course our country's debt has skyrocketed. So the solution is to take money from the most vulnerable in society to fix the money problems created by the 2017 tax cuts. Yes, this totally makes sense......NOT!!!!!

The Republicans have been trying to eliminate Medicare and Social Security for years. And the working class and rural poor (ie their base) keeps voting for these schmucks.

You really cannot blame the tax plan at this point. It went into affect January 1st and we haven't paid in against the new plan yet. Only time will tell if we lose revenue or remain neutral as a result.

McConnell is correct, we have a spending problem. Have had for at least 30 years. If they'd only pass a balanced budget - I'd be happy.

No one is suggesting changes to current social security recipients.

Everyone should be behind reform in the same way that medical reform has changed the number of years that we now qualify for SS.
The wealthy pay mathematically "all" the major taxes. ( except day to day taxes - gas, sales, etc....)

Who is 'US"?

Absoluetly none of the paragraph is true.
