Someone else's dog

I was outside this morning and a lady was walking in front of my house. I heard her yelling and as she came into view I saw her pick up a tiny dog, maybe a chihuahua, and start screaming at it. She was holding the dog in one hand, shaking it, yelling, "What kind of F***ing dog are you!? What's wrong with you?"

I was shocked and so I opened my mouth - I said, "If you don't want the dog, I'll take it."

She said, "It's none of your F***ing business, so shut the f**k up you stupid F***ing bitch."

This seemed funny so I laughed and said, "Okay, I will," and turned to go inside, as she walked on carrying the dog. After several steps she turned around and yelled, "Who F***ing asked you? Mind your own business!"

So I said, "Keep it down and I will."

I avoid confrontations and I would never have gotten into a shouting match with a lunatic, but I worry for the poor little dog. I'm also worried this lunatic knows where I live. What should I do? Keep my mouth shut next time?

I'd call animal control and tell them she was abusing the poor thing. They could talk to her. She sounds like a nut who would harm an animal-for that matter, shaking the dog is abusive.

YES! I would. But I have no way to find her. She was a stranger, walking through my neighborhood. I wasn't about to follow her.
