My high schoolers needed to do a history report on moments that changed the world…

It didn’t only have to be a paper, that’s how my daughter did hers though….it was a project, so kids could choose however they wanted to display the project

So some kids wrote papers, some did a display board , some did mini- documentaries that were 4-5 minutes long

Wow, so many moments to choose from. Hard to pick one. I guess every generation would think of something. that changed their lives. Like, for me it would be either the personal computer or the Internet. It was totally life changing. But for my son- who is BTW in his second semester of Computer Science and Telecommunications- he always had those. I guess I’ll ask him when he comes back from class!

Great assignment. I'm not impressed with the McDonald's topic but your kids chose interesting ones. Especially your son since covid just happened.

I'd be impressed if any picked March 20, 1602.

I’d be extremely surprised. Most K-12 schools don’t teach or only give a brief neutral summary of VOC and they sure don’t teach the intricate connections in history to the extent that I think they should.

Glad I’m not the only one unimpressed with McDonalds.

Sounds like she did a really good job. One of the things I’ve always loved about history is the delicate intricacies of connections. The ripples that lead to today both positives and negatives. That she included this shows a critical thinking skill that has become increasingly lacking in education.
Slimshandy wrote: Thu Feb 01, 2024 2:17 pm She did it all…she went into detail about how many lives have been saved by the ability to use plastics in medical care, and she went into detail about how there’s a million people dying a year in developing countries because of plastics pollution…

She equated it to the when man first discovered the ability to harness fire, we can use it to propel our whole species forward, or we can burn everything down because we didn’t know how to use it properly …
Quorra2.0 wrote: Thu Feb 01, 2024 12:36 pm Did your Dd just focus solely on the invention of plastic or did she include how its invention not only changed the world in that moment but the future both positive and negative impacts? The first would be fine but I hope the teacher graded her higher if she did the later, including extra credit points. Coronavirus pandemic would have been a good topic as well, it’s very broad not only have human and societal impacts but environmental, medical science, etc.

I would not have been impressed with any of the McDonald’s ones though tbh. They weren’t the first or even the oldest fast food restaurant.

We just finished doing this project for the History Fair. 1st place winner did her project on the Computer Revolution/Information Age. 2nd place winner (her sister) did hers on The Invention of the Wheel.
I always love doing this project for the history fair— some really interesting topics are chosen!

I was just kind of puzzled/surprised.

All the other topics I could really see as moments that changed the world, but this was a resturant opening lol…

It did have both negative and positive effects on the world, so I would call it a legitimate topic. Not everything has to be super serious. If it’s a topic that got the kids having fun while learning research habits, that’s a win.
