Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law a bill prohibiting race-based hair discrimination in Texas workplaces, schools and housing policies.

House Bill 567, introduced by Democratic Rep. Rhetta Bowers of Rowlett, sailed through both chambers of the Legislature with overwhelming support after the same bill stalled during the legislative session in 2021. The policy, which Abbott signed Saturday, will go into effect Sept. 1.

Twenty states have passed the CROWN Act — an acronym for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair, according to the CROWN Coalition, an organization that champions the legislation. Harris County, the state’s most populous, and the city of Austin have adopted versions of the legislation.

Wow! Thanks for enlightening me. I never would’ve thought there’s such a thing as race hair discrimination. That’s so appalling to me! Is there anything haters won’t use to demean others?! It’s freaking HAIR!! Who cares?
Bit then, there’s the whole Jew = big nose crap too.

For my first teaching job, I straightened my hair before the interview. I used to have the misconception that straight hair looked more “professional” (a lot to unpack there)
Well, when I showed up for work my hair was natural. The principal made at least 2 comments that day about it. “I didn’t even recognize you!” “Wow! Your hair looks like that?!” Like bro had never seen curly hair before 🙄🙄

Good.

When I was in high school, a teacher loudly quipped at a student, "You are dripping on my desk!" He had a jheri curl. 🙄

But I'm still the winner! They lied! They cheated! They stole the election!

That's awesome.

I never realized how much people discriminate based on hair, especially the hair of BIPOC. A friend of mine wrote this blog some years back, it was very eye opening.

I don’t think he meant anything malicious by it. But it was off-putting that he felt the need to even bring up my hair. I didn’t realize at the time that it was a micro-aggression.

In regards to a pp that mentioned a teacher saying something about a Jheri curl: I work with a teacher who has said some horrid things about kids’ natural hair. I believe she is malicious in her “jokes” and I have absolutely called her out on it before.

This teacher was seriously malicious. In more ways than his jokes.🤬

I do not miss those days of fighting with relaxers, straightening combs and grease because natural/curly hair was considered “unkept”.

Wearing my hair curly was so liberating and I love all the healthy hair products on the market now.

”Your hair looks better straight” is what I have gotten a lot.

Some schools/employers went as far as banning dreads and braids.

It was ridiculous.
