A lot of Americans are afraid of their own shadows. That’s why they think the worst and pull out the guns.
And a lot of Americans have their heads so far in the sand that they become victims every 22 seconds…

Some Americans actually think protecting themselves is, I dunno… a better idea
You want to protect yourself, yet, you do not shred. A fast and easy way to protect yourself instead you would call the police for someone taking a few cans out of a open air recycling bin. If someone if going through the green bin or ripping open black garbage bags I believe someone would say something, but taking cans out of a recycling bin no one is saying a damn word.
Ok... I really don't know how to communicate the difference between people that have one trash can for everything, and people who have separate recycling.

I totally get why you would not care... But your trash situation is not the same as everyone else's, and not calling the police if someone is rummaging through an elderly neighbor's trash might mean financial devastation for that person.

Either you get this or you don't... There's not much more I can say to get you to understand.

I also live in Canada, in an urban residential neighbourhood where people looking to trade in alcohol cans and bottles for the money will regularly come by on garbage day for them once my and my neighbour’s recycling bins are by the side of the road, off our properties. It would never occur to me (nor my neighbours, as I’ve never seen it happen) to call the police over that? They’re not doing anything illegal or dangerous to the neighbourhood that requires protection?

Did you ever find out who those two men were that literally had your neighborhood up in arms?

Nope… police never found them.

And more stinky trash is going to places on top of that other stinky trash through out the week.

Placing the bag of trash aka poop in a trash can is properly disposing of it....

You do know that outdoor trash cans just stink in general don't you. I really thought you were smarter than this. Smh.
In our neighborhood, trash cans are viewed as private. Majority wash the trash cans weekly in warmer weather, so they are not all the stinky. We often freeze non-compost food waste until trash day to avoid flies and such. I am surrounded by retirees, so our neighborhood would be up in arms if random people just started throwing away dog poo in their cans, lol. Of course, most people would not have access to our trash cans, as we can only have them visible on trash pick up day.
That reminds of the commercials “how to not turn into your parents”. The new homeowner is labeling his trash cans, putting his phone number on in case they go missing and wipes them clean after washing them.

What kind of garbage do your neighbors produce that makes them smell so bad? Recycle can should not have anything with odor thrown in it. Trash can should have smelly things tied in trash bags so nothing sticks to the trash can. .
Those commercials are so funny.

Pretty much any meat/dairy food can produce quite a bit of stink, leaking, and flys in the warmer weather — and obviously if a bunch of people are putting dog poo in there, lol, my neighbors just would not want people messing with their garbage, it’s just not an acceptable norm here and would be very out of place.

What do you think of garbage disposals? Do they make things worse or do they keep rotting food out of our garbage.

I think garbage disposals are false advertising, lol, because grinding things up really tiny still does make them liquid, and eventually all those tiny pieces of solid food & especially fat/grease are brutal to the home and city waste water pipes. Our city has a public awareness campaign with flyers and everything reminding people not to put food waste down sinks.

I did not realize this when I was younger and my hubby had to replace pipes in our basement — there are no words to even describe the horror of such waste after 2 decades, lol. I am now far wiser.

That’s what I thought. I don’t use it too often and always feel a little guilt. It’s also why I don’t buy whole chickens. Too much left behind that I don’t know what to do with.

We love our rotisserie chickens in our house, lol, I just plucked leftover bones from the freezer and threw them out for trash day tomorrow as it’s snowing here, lol, so they’ll be fine overnight.

Oh good lord, who knew that tossing trash in a trash can could be such an offensive action.

Out where I am our trash company answered the burning question of can ownership: they own them, they belong to them, they don’t charge for the can, they charge for pick up, and they are intended for trash to be placed in it. Of course then people changed the narrative to ‘well I’m not paying for someone else’s trash’, forget that they are having their trash picked up and it’s not done by weight. I will say the number of upset people over trash in a trash can was very minimal, most people would prefer it places in a can versus left on the lawn.

Anything food products (or poop) are going to stink after a few days in the trash. Trash bags can leak and even after you take the bag out, smells and bacteria can still stick around. We keep our cans in our garage in between pickups, so no, I don’t want smells and potentially pests being attracted into my garage and so we wash our cans.
