The Justice Department on Monday charged a Texas couple with dealing pills laced with fentanyl, which it said led to three deaths of three students, according to court documents unsealed on Monday.

Luis Eduardo Navarrete, 21, and Magaly Mejia Cano, 29 are charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance.

Can they be charged with the deaths of the students?

"On multiple occasions, law enforcement members have observed Navarrete and Mejia Cano conduct hand-to-hand transactions with multiple individuals who sometimes arrive on foot and in vehicles," according to the complaint. "Many of the hand-to-hand transactions were with juvenile students of RL Turner High School."

Is there a reason nothing was done at those times? This seems like a bonkers statement.

I think I’ve changed my stance on the death penalty and support it now…

They can be charged federally under the Controlled Substances Act. If they’re found guilty, it’s a minimum sentence of 20 years. Using this law to prosecute people is sometimes controversial, since 20 years in prison for, say, a fellow addict who shares drugs with a friend who dies seems like overkill, but this seems like a pretty textbook case of it being appropriate.

I think rotting in prison twenty years is much more painful. Especially if the other inmates perceive them as child abusers. But I will say it has to be a special sort of low down bastard that sells to CHILDREN. Middle aged students. Sell to adults is scummy enough. But children? If I were the guards and the inmate had a go at them I’d take my sweet time breaking up that fight.

I wonder if they were undercover?

According to the CDC, there were over 70K fentanyl deaths in 2021. That is more than double the number of deaths due to meth and coke, respectively. Scary.
