In my brain, I'm thinking a thicker liquid would cause worse issues with his swallowing? Is he able to drink water?

Has he been to an ENT and a pulmonologist?

My mom sometimes has issues swallowing thicker liquids seem to work best maybe because it goes down slower. Thin liquids she always chokes(goes down the wrong pipe.)

Why does drinking thin liquids cause pneumonia?

He’s probably aspirating fluid into his lungs. It’s like swallowing the wrong way I guess but he can’t cough it up or he does it all the time. So they thicken the liquid with some corn starch like stuff. At least they do that with stroke patients who need to relearn correct swallowing. Now why the sm can’t put the thickener into his drinks idk. I think you can use it in any drink. I’d probably hit her over the head with the canister myself.

For once, I agree with these evil step mom posts. That was pretty ignorant and arrogant of her. Does she not know or understand the child's medical diagnoses? Or does she just think she knows better than the doctors? Or was she actively trying to harm the kid?

Either way, pretty bizarre. I am a mom and a step mom. I just don't get all of these step moms who want to take on even more work and responsibility than we already have. I follow instructions and play a supporting role but otherwise, I stay in my lane. I already have enough on my plate.

They do that with Alzheimer's patients too. The swallow function starts to leave them, so you mix a pack of thickener in We used nectar thick with my ma, and it's pretty easy. I don't know why this woman just can't take care of the little boy how she's supposed to.

He has been to every type of specialist. Thickened liquids are easier to swallow when you have dysphagia and less likely to go into the lungs. He can drink any thickened fluid he can not drink thin/regular water or fluid.

I think I was going with how I feel with a thicker consistency in foods and drinks but I'm obviously very off-base, as I do not deal with his health issues.

That the SM would ignore this is disturbing to me, and I'm sincerely sorry.

They do use thickener with stroke patients who need to relearn swallowing. I’m not a speech therapist but the thickener makes swallowing easier somehow. The kids should be seeing a speech therapist, OT, and Probably has PT also. An ENT probably isn’t a bad idea. My youngest has speech apraxia and until recently would gag on certain foods. Spit them up. I couldn’t get speech to look into because he ate well enough for them. I’m encouraging him to eat vegetables which he can if they’re in soups or dips. Idk why it’s a problem but I guess it’s the speech apraxia.

I'm so sorry he goes through this.
