Let's say you have a husband and wife. The wife is the planner of the family. She is the one who plans every single holiday, vacation, family dinner, family outings, etc.
The husband is planning his wife's 50th birthday. He calls the family and makes plans with everyone. Do you need the husband to specify that this event is a surprise for her birthday? (it's not a party, so not a surprise party, but a surprise family get together and concert)
Would you assume this was a surprise?

Yes, if he doesn’t say it’s a surprise, how are people supposed to know that?

This
The oranges of the island are like blazing fire
Amongst the emerald boughs
And the lemons are like the paleness of a lover
Who has spent the night crying.
My soul was ripped to shreds on 10/27/14

I don’t see how who the usual planner of events is affects whether this is a surprise event or not. If it is, just say so. Don’t make silly assumptions.

If he wanted it to be a surprise he should have specifically stated it. I am dense like that at times and I wouldn't necessarily think surprise without it being specifically stated.

I wouldn’t assume surprise unless he specifically said so.
