Let's say you have a husband and wife. The wife is the planner of the family. She is the one who plans every single holiday, vacation, family dinner, family outings, etc.

The husband is planning his wife's 50th birthday. He calls the family and makes plans with everyone. Do you need the husband to specify that this event is a surprise for her birthday? (it's not a party, so not a surprise party, but a surprise family get together and concert)

Yes I need to be told this is a surprise. Otherwise I might ask the wife something I’m not supposed to.

Yes, if you want something to be a surprise you need to state that it's a surprise. Why would you not? This seems like kind of a no brainer thing. What an odd post.
