Are Americans always so rude?

I honestly thought the US was the only country that auto grats on large parties.
I've also personally never gotten a refill (in any country) that wasn't free. I can understand why they may have been confused, of course that's no reason to be rude about it.

I have had three bad experiences all from Americans (or possibly Canadians, don't come for me but I can't always tell the difference in the accents).

One was when a woman got angry because others were in their swimsuits who had just come up from the water. This was back over the summer.

A couple weeks ago I had a large party get mad because there is an automatic gratuity when the table is more than 10 people. This is listed on the menu and signs are posted.

Last night I had a couple who were angry at me because they did not realise that they were charged for refills on their drinks.

I am sure not all Americans are rude but is this common for servers in the US? I try to give everyone grace because maybe they are just tired from traveling or having a bunch of kids or just life. I don't tend to have problems with other people even when there is a language barrier and we have to use Google translate.

I've found that generally customers who are visiting rather than reside in the location tend to be the most rude - both in the US and abroad. It's as if the idea that they will never have to see the server again brings out the worst in them.
