I wonder why they want to stop teaching history?

So they want to stop using books and lessons they identify as problematic. That is neither abolishing history lessons or a choice to stop teaching. Sounds more like they want more accurate and comprehensive materials. I've seen a lot of "history" books and there are many that are not only incorrect but disturbing in the distortion of history.

Until a suitable alternative is developed, we should instead devote greater attention toward civics and ensuring students understand our democratic processes and how they can be involved," he said.

Columbus did not discover this country. Columbus, Lincoln and others were slave owners. Oregon was a sundown state. All of those facts need to be taught. History needs to be taught accurately.
