Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., made a puzzling argument on Tuesday in order to counter a conservative nonprofit's argument about free markets providing paid family leave.

"Do we know how long puppies are allowed to stay with their mothers after a dog has given birth?" she asked during a House Oversight Committee hearing on paid leave.

"Uh, eight weeks. So, the market has decided that women and people who give birth deserve less time with their children than a dog," she added.

Ocasio-Cortez seemed to be referring to the practice of breeders keeping puppies until they reach 8 weeks of age, at which point they're sold and likely never see their parents again.

So is she suggesting that we moms and other "people" who have given birth must stay with the babies until they are ready to go out on their own? What age would THAT be, 8? 10? 15? I'm not sure what other point she could be making by using puppies as a comparison.

The fact that we, as a country, don't see the benefit of maternity and paternity leave as well as early childhood care is abysmal.

Nope.
It’s all about maternity leave.
Why do so many of you call her an idiot!
And then there’s Omar .
I’m trying to decide if it’s prejudice or just ignorance that causes the bashing of these women?

I do not see why this is so difficult for so many of you to catch on?

It would be nice to see more of a maternity/paternity leave for parents of newborns but I do feel the standard and time-frame should be decided by the individual companies.

Those in support of this want PAID time. Does that fall under the FMLA? If not, who pays for that time off?

As for AOC, if nothing more, her court jester antics have provided considerable comedy relief this past year.
