Well, was she going to pay for it? Schools work on such a limited budget, they can't give out lunches for free to every kid who doesn't bring their money. There are free lunch programs for those who need it. The school can't be expected to just eat the bill for every kid who shows up without their lunch money, just like I wouldn't send my child down to the corner deli and expect them to be fed for free if they have no money with them. Her heart was in the right place, but the school has to do what they need to do.
The article even says that the school provides a lunch if kids don't have money, they just don't get the $8 a la carte meal, they get the lunch of the day.

I'd wonder wtf the kid was buying that it was eight dollars. I don't even want to spend eight dollars on my own lunch.
