SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A transgender San Diegan is calling for change when it comes to blood donation.

Currently, the FDA’s recommendation to blood establishments is that in the context of the donor history questionnaire, male or female gender should be self-identified and self-reported for blood donation.

It’s not a right to be able to give blood. Kind of a stupid thing to fight about. I remember I organized a blood drive at college then I couldn’t give blood because I didn’t weigh enough.

I hate that a potential blood donor was turned away, but I understand that the medical protocol exists for a reason. I imagine now that this issue has been brought forward that it wouldn't be too difficult to fix.

That's a really stupid reason to turn someone away for donating blood. What if this donor was O-? O- is a universal donor.

There are strict guidelines regarding blood donation. I can't donate blood because I spent six months in Europe. It is because of the mad cow thing in the 80s. This individual was probably denied because of HIV concerns. They will also turn you away if you had hepatitis, history of illicit drug use.

It is not a stupid thing to not want to be discriminated against. There is no medical reason why they shouldn't be able to donate blood.

I think this is in place because of HIV concerns. I’ve always strongly disagreed with that. Anyone who has unprotected/unsafe S*x is a risk and should be treated with the same level of caution.
