I, personally, think it's a symptom of something else going on.

I believe that other poster simply meant anxiety is a mental illness, opposed to a physical I’ll mess like, say, cancer. That’s how I interpreted it.

Mental illnesses can be just as life threatening as cancer.

Experiencing occasional anxiety is normal and not a genuine illness. Irrational and disabling anxiety can be diagnosed as an anxiety disorder (GAD, panic disorders, social anxiety disorder, etc). These are genuine illnesses. I think some people don't understand the difference between "normal" anxiety, i.e., I experienced anxiety at my daughter's wedding, with the debilitating nature of a true anxiety disorder.

"Anxiety" is an umbrella term for several diagnosis - most of which have both physical and behavioral manifestations, and strong genetic links. I have no idea why people would not consider them a "genuine illness" since they can be incapacitating.

As someone who has an anxiety disorder, I know it is a genuine illness. I think people are just ignorant when it comes to mental illnesses for the most part. I know I was before I started having panic attacks.

But it’s classified as a mental illness.

In my experience when people make it a point to differentiate between mental and physical illnesses, they are being dismissive of mental illnesses.
