Why not. What does living in a small town have to do with it?

I can't go anywhere without seeing a family member. Even if I don't talk to them they will talk to me and my kids.

You simply turn around and leave without saying anything. Not hard at all. Pain in the ass? Yeah, but that's what is involved with cutting toxic people out of your life. Start shopping in the next town over.

I need to be able to buy food, get gas, and pay my bills. Plus the kids don't fully understand everything so they aren't going to just ignore family. Moving was the best option.

my mom bought a new house & moved at the start of the lockdown. My dh is an essential worker in contact with a lot of people, so I haven't been able to go see her new house yet.
