I would not feel obligated to go. I would send a condolence card and flowers or donation.

If I would have to travel for it and need a hotel room....no. That is reserved for immediate family such as my parents. If it is being held locally to where I can drive to and from in the same day I might.

If it's not a major hassle to go then I would go. If it is a hassle (ie. time off, travel, etc) then I wouldn't bother with it.
