JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Florida teachers are navigating red tape as they remove books from their classrooms, fearing a felony charge.
A new Florida law requires all books in a school to be reviewed and later put into a database. Teachers tell First Coast News they're incredibly worried and they say the law is vague. Some teachers are removing all books from their shelves for fear of risking jail time."

Florida better be prepared for an even greater teacher shortage and over filled classrooms.

My kids’ librarian who is also a family friend posted an article about this yesterday. In it, one teacher said some teachers are telling students not to bring books from home either because they don’t want to be criminally liable. WTH?! And we wonder why we have a teacher shortage.

What do you mean by "it". What are you referring to? Did they specify what books need to be removed to make it easier on teachers? Have they actually clearly defined "questionable content"? What happens if a parent complains? The phrase: "Require book selections to be free of pornography and prohibited materials harmful to minors, suited to student needs, and appropriate for the grade level and age group" is far too vague.

Quick question: if teachers don't have a grasp on those things, how have they been preparing lesson plans for their classes all of these years? Aren't lesson plans supposed to be geared toward grade level and age group?jessilin0113 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 1:51 pmWhat do you mean by "it". What are you referring to? Not quite sure what's vague about appropriate for grade level and age group. Definitely not seeing what's vague about keeping porn out of the classroom. I mean, no porn in school sounds kind of basic to me. Like a bare minimum thing that a teacher should be doing. Maybe it's just me though.

Evidence that it's not that hard for a teacher to know what's appropriate for the grade and age? Ummmmm ... Because they teach the kids currently, so that's the basics they have to know in order to teach them???
I also think that an average adult can identify pornograph pretty easily,, unless they have some type of a mental deficiency. In which case they shouldn't be teaching?

You didn't read it? A Media Specialist is required to go through every book in a classroom. I've half a mind to make a list of my own and submit them for removal.
