The only one that could be blamed on ignorance is the not knowing that refills cost extra. The other 2 instances are not uncommon in the US as well. Adding gratuity to a check of large groups (number of people differs among restaurants) is actually quite common here.Anonymous 1 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 01, 2022 10:50 amIt could just be ignorance I had not thought about that.RIZZY wrote: ↑Mon Aug 01, 2022 10:40 am I don't think Americans are particularly rude. I do think that we tend to be ignorant of how things are in other countries. Refills tend to be free here. The lady who was upset about bathing suits sounds like a teetotaler but we certainly don't corner the market on that one. Regardless, it sounds like these are just ignorant people who didn't read up on the places they were visiting.
I must say, though, your tone and style of writing seems quite American.
How exactly does my post come off as American? I do not understand that at all.
Are Americans always so rude?

Idk.. My kid has a summer job as a serve.. last night she came home in tears because customers were very rude to her. Their complaints were regarding issues she has no control over. (Certain sections of the pool area are closed, customers had to get out of the water because it started to rain and lightning, the kitchen took over an hour to prepare simple dishes). One customer got in her face and had to be escorted from the premises. I think people are just more rude now.
My kid just turned 18 this and this is her first job.. you would think grown adults would know to take grievances to the manager and not belittle wait staff.

Lol she’s full of shit. You write in an American moodAnonymous 1 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 01, 2022 11:04 amOkay I guess. I don't see how any of it comes off as American. I've never even been to the US lol.
I have been told I sounded american once before on here. It was because my English was too good... Like a bunch of other countries don't speak English. I don't think I sound like anything in particular lol.

Wow! I've never been to Italy, but my BIL only hand rude servers in Rome- probably bc it's very touristy. In Paris, our experience was wonderful. We made an effort to speak or at least order in French. They were very gracious and even patiently enunciated so we could say it correctly ( we asked). However, in Brussels, on the French side, omg they could not be bothered with us. In London they were very friendly. The best place was Spain- both Madrid and especially Barcelona. Chatty, friendly, and helpful servers. Never been to Germany.

I probably should be in a few situations but I can't bring myself to do that. I know there is reputation of servers in some places but I have not seen that myself where I live or the places I have traveled. Except in Italy. The servers were rude to me every time when I was in Italy.BobCobbMagob wrote: ↑Mon Aug 01, 2022 10:05 am I don’t know… my question is why are servers always so rude in every other country besides America?

I used to read British authors like James Herriot. I’m not sure her post comes off as American other than she doesn’t use British names for things. Now she could be American and even a troll. She could also be Australian, Irish, or Scottish and sincere. I’d be surprised a European found us but say it happened. One can’t judge every American by three experiences. It sounds to me like she’s not paying attention to the polite kind people of any nationality. I’ve met entitled Canadians, Cubans, Russians, British, etc. That doesn’t mean those people of those countries are all that way.RIZZY wrote: ↑Mon Aug 01, 2022 11:02 amThe tone and style of writing. Did you think I meant that other countries don't speak English? Do you think Americans tend to write or speak the same way as people in other English-speaking countries?Anonymous 1 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 01, 2022 11:22 amI have been told I sounded american once before on here. My son has been told he sounds British. He thinks because he says “bloody” sometimes and also because he has no accent. He learned precise annunciation because of his speech therapy.Anonymous 1 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 01, 2022 11:22 amI have been told I sounded american once before on here. As far as the person who says Germans want quiet children I agree with them. I’ll tolerate the noise but I’m left thinking thank god mine are grown lol.
