So yesterday ds and I had the age old conversation-
“Mom! Can Billy stay for dinner?”
“If it’s alright with his mom”
Billy calls home
“Mrs. Billy’s mom said it was ok!”
“Ok”
Billy- “Mrs, mom, what are we having?”
“Steak, baked potatoes, brocolli and salad.”
“Great!”
We proceed to eat dinner with both boys inhaling it as fast as good manners allow andBilly goes home.
This afternoon his mother flags me down (they live down the street.)
“Thanks for having Billy over yesterday, he really enjoyed it...” she has a look on her face.
“But...”
“Well, he said you let him use a knife...”
“Yes, a steak knife, what’s the problem?”
“He’s never used onebefore.”
“He didn’t say anything or seem to have any issues.”
“It’s just that he’s awful young and it’s so dangerous!”
“It was was a steak knife not a freaking samurai
sword...I have to go...”
The kid is 10 and has never cut his own meat?! Is that normal?
Ummm.... he’s 10?!
I don't know how some of these people have that much energy to do this much mundane stuff for their kids. No, I don't think thats normal at all.
Remind me to ask you to invite me over for dinner.

I just set the table with knives and didn’t think anything of it. DS has been cutting his own meat since he was like 6(with supervision.)

I would laugh it off and carry on. Guess you'll see in time whether she deems your house too fraught with perils for her little one to be in.
No it's not normal lol. I'm pretty sure ds skinned his first rabbit at that age but he has had a pocket knife since 7.

I mean I still cut my 13 year olds meat because she has dexterity issues and also to make sure she’s actually eating it, but my 11 year old has been cutting her own for years. It’s not like you let them run around with knives, they were sitting at the dinner table.

My special needs daughter is 13 and never cut her meat. She literally picks the whole thing up with her hand and eats it.
We're trying to teach her but there's so many other things she needs to learn.
My youngest son was afraid of knives until 11. I'm a chef so it wasn't from us teaching him that either.
The rest of the kids used one no issues around 6/7.
