Why would the leaders of the Church not have received guidance from God leading to them dealing with this earlier?
Does He not care, or are whole denominations of Christianity so deaf to his guidance that their actions in such things are indistinguishable from not having received any guidance at all?

Anytime you have a power system that dictates certain members (in this case males) have greater authority over others (females and children) granted simply through their birth or anatomy, you have an opportunity for abuse. The "male head of household" dictum discourages females and children from speaking up, or receiving support from others.
Add to this a climate of shame around sexuality and it will be less likely the victims to come forward.
This isn't limited to Southern Baptists, or the Catholic Church, or isolated Orthodox Jewish communities, or Fundamentalist Mormons.
Three factors contribute to the increased likelihood of abuse: Strict hierarchy, isolation from or distrust of "outsiders," and fear. Fear can be shame around S*x, fear of being shunned, fear of being blamed, or fear of causing the abuser to suffer in some way. All of these are used to control the victims and hide the abuse.

And this dynamic has been identified and openly talked about since the 1960s.MonarchMom wrote: ↑Mon Feb 11, 2019 6:21 am Anytime you have a power system that dictates certain members (in this case males) have greater authority over others (females and children) granted simply through their birth or anatomy, you have an opportunity for abuse. So why is it secular social forces leading to this revelation, rather than messages from heaven? Why would guidance from God be so weak as to be less relevant than messages from society, even among his most fervent followers?

I do know that those who seek to abuse will gravitate toward a social situation that gives them access to victims. And that systems that values some members over others will foster greater abuse.
Are you speaking specifically about Southern Baptists here?Aletheia wrote: ↑Mon Feb 11, 2019 7:06 amAnd this dynamic has been identified and openly talked about since the 1960s.MonarchMom wrote: ↑Mon Feb 11, 2019 6:21 am Anytime you have a power system that dictates certain members (in this case males) have greater authority over others (females and children) granted simply through their birth or anatomy, you have an opportunity for abuse. I saw it, but I grew up in a Southern Baptist church and wouldn’t describe them as the “most fervent followers.”Aletheia wrote: ↑Mon Feb 11, 2019 9:04 amYes. See the link in the OP.SolidlyAverage wrote: ↑Mon Feb 11, 2019 8:28 amAre you speaking specifically about Southern Baptists here?
