OMG. My 10 year old keeps asking me when he can sit in the front seat and my answer is “when you’re 6 feet tall.” I still put him in a booster for long highway trips because it’s safer.

MIL said my husband rode in something like this. I never rode in anything. Never had a seat or strap of any kind. I also didn't start wearing a seatbelt regularly until 1986 when seatbelt laws came into effect in CA. I was 10 years old at the time. Up until then it was just if you're somewhere inside the vehicle you are good to go.
That goes back to the '60's. I remember the car my family had when I was a child. No seatbelts. No AC either.
