Jaunty Firewood Carrier
Carry out a seasonal chore in style with a log sling that costs less than $15 to make!

Step 1: Turn a canvas bag inside out, then use a seam ripper to undo the gusseted corners. Using scissors, cut the bag along the side seams so that it lays completely flat when open.

Step 2: Lay the bag wrong side up. Using a pencil and a ruler, draw and 8 1/2-inch diagonal line across each of the bag's corners. Cut the bag along the lines, as shown; discard corner pieces. Then, fold each cut edge over by 1/4 inch and topstitch in place.

Step 3: Cut a piece of faux bois oilcloth that measures 18 1/4''L x 13 1/2W. Flip the bag right side up, then lay the panel across the bag's middle section, as shown. Using bright-orange thread, topstitch the panel in place along its edges.

Step 4: Reinforce the handles by folding each strap back on itself. Clamp or pin the strap in place, then stitch it together. Repeat for the second strap.

Papier-mâché bowls
Upcycle shredded paper into a set of gilded decorative bowls. First, choose a bowl (or multiple different-size bowls) to use as a mold. For each container you plan to create, follow these steps:

Step 1: Tightly cover the outside of your bowl with plastic wrap, securing it on the inside with painter's tape, and turn upside down. In another bowl, mix equal parts Elmer's white school glue and water. Dip shredded paper into the mixture, evenly coating each piece; then lay the strips atop the plastic-wrapped bowl so they overlap, until the bowl's exterior is completely covered. Let dry for three hours.

Step 2: Flip the bowl right side up and trim away any excess paper along the rim with scissors. Then, loosen and separate your paper bowl from the plastic-wrapped bowl.

Step 3: Paint the interior of your paper bowl with white acrylic paint and let it dry for one hour; then paint the exterior and let it dry for an hour.

Step 4: Cover the outside of your paper bowl with wax paper, securing it to the bowl's outer rim with painter's tape. Next, apply gold leaf to the bowl's interior. Follow the package instructions, and let set overnight.

Step 5: Apply neutral-toned Liberon Wax to the interior of the bowl with a soft cloth. Allow the wax to set for an hour, then gently buff to a shine with a clean soft cloth. Finally, remove the tape and wax paper, and display a few treasures in your lustrous vessel.

Birch-Bark Leaf Wreath
Birch bark is the key to these autumn "leaves." You'll need twenty-four 6 3/4"W x 20 1/2"L sheets of birch bark, a 20-inch-diameter foam wreath form, and 45 small wooden cubes to act as risers. First, print and cut out our oak- and maple-leaf templates. Trace 75 assorted leaves onto the birch-bark sheets, and cut out. Varying the leaf type, hot-glue 30 leaves onto the wreath form. Then, hot-glue a wooden cube onto the back of each remaining leaf. Using our photo as a guide, hot-glue the cube-backed leaves atop the original leaves.

Witty Gloves
Bring a bit of earnest irony to a pair of gloves with this hilariously tender riff on tough knuckle tattoos. Borrow our intentionally sweet phrases above, or come up with your own eight-letter expressions. We chose wool-blend gloves, but any knit version will work.

Step 1: Slide one glove onto your hand. Using a pastel chalk pencil, mark each knuckle with a horizontal line at the bottom of each finger (the first joint) and another just below the second joint. Remove the glove, then repeat for the other hand. If needed, enlist a friend to mark your dominant hand.

Step 2: Lay the gloves, marked sides up, on a flat surface. Working within the horizontal lines, and using the chalk pencil, spell out the phrase you plan to stitch across both gloves. Try the gloves on to check that your letters are positioned to satisfaction.

Step 3: Using six-strand embroidery thread that contrasts with the color of your gloves, sew directly over the chalk letters with a basic stem stitch, making sure to sew through the top layer only. (Get a quick stem-stitch tutorial here.) Remove any stray chalk with a damp cotton swab—and spread the word!

Burlap Wine Cover
A scrap of rustic burlap, wrapped around a regional wine and topped with a lush remnant of velvet ribbon, is elevated to the truly elegant. Stencil the hostess's initials or a short greeting for an extra touch.
