That was one of the saddest stories I've ever read. This case is currently being investigated because of the protests. The one good thing is the cops involved have already been fired. During a memorial for Elijah, the cops were posting these pictures mimicking how they choked him to death:

Mari Newman, a lawyer for Mr. McClain’s family, compared the photos to images of people smiling next to the bodies of Black people who had been lynched.
“What we have seen is pictures of Aurora police officers taking pictures just like racists in the Jim Crow South,” she said during a news conference on Friday near the memorial site.

And the same department where an on-duty officer was found in his patrol car, in the middle of the road, drunk as hell. The responding officers turned their body cams on and off, didn’t test his BAC despite smelling alcohol and didn’t secure a bottle of clear liquid found in the car for testing. The evidence taken at the hospital (his blood) and his testimony in an Internal Affairs investigation where he admitted being drunk couldn’t be used to prosecute him, and he didn’t lose his job.

On the one hand, good for them for apologizing once they were caught, which is the bare minimum but more than usually happens in these cases. On the other, it’s just laughable that the response here is “oh, these taxpayer funded employees royally fucked up? Don’t worry Aurorans, your tax dollars will now pay for their therapy too”.

For Pete sake. That comment from the CHIEF! Infuriating. Ok - great, that's your process. Congratulations. Just because it's technically legal doesn't at all make it right.

But do you NOT expect these people you're hiring to use discernment? Isn't that a huge part of what police are supposed to do is make judgement calls based on each individual situation?

This force - Prime example of desperate need of reform.
