NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The last week in New York City has been like the wild west.

Astonishing statistics show a 342 percent increase in shootings last week – 53 compared to 12 in 2019.

They also show a 414 percent jump in the number of people shot – 74 compared 14 in 2019.

CBS2’s Marcia Kramer reports Mayor Bill de Blasio is vowing not to let the city slip back into the bad old days of gun violence, but the demand for cuts to the NYPD budget has some wondering if officers have abandoned proactive policing. Police said there were a total of 28 shootings with 38 victims in 72 hours over the weekend.

Last weekend, Chicago had 104 people shot which 14 of them died. The youngest being a 3 year old boy named Mekhi James. I think they have strict gun laws there, right?!

Strict gun laws in a single state are virtually meaningless. There’s no guarded border to cross between Illinois and Indiana, and you can get from Chicago to one of many border town gun shops in under three hours. Good argument for a federal crackdown though.

The south side of Chicago has had a violence problem for decades. When Obama was president the blame fell on him. He was the president, the leader of the country. Obama, rightly so, was criticized for not doing enough to at least try to come up with a plan. Now, almost four years later we have a new president. Same issues, same deafening silence.

Crime has been going down since the early 1990's. But not enough in certain areas. If the local authorities can't fix it, the federal government should help. Trump blamed Obama during his whole 2016 race for the violence in Chicago. Now it's time to look at Trump and see where he's failing. Instead of trashing everyone else at his rallies, maybe he can come up with a solid plan of his own.

Sure he will. My Roomba will achieve sentience before that happens.

Is this that thread you’re taking about? She didn’t say anything about Democratic states so I wasn’t sure.

It was Valentina who said it was blue states and blue mayors. That's not factual. NYC has 9 million people. Only ten states in the country have more than 9 million people in their whole state. Statistically, the states that have the lowest levels of violence are blue states. Just wanted to correct the information. It's an American problem, not a blue state problem like valentina tried to make it.
