Here's an idea, let's just shut down everything for at least 5, 10 years, no one leaves their house for ANYTHING, the hell with making a living.

Thanks for responding to that so clearly. I was actually born in Montreal.
Didn’t England come in and try to force everyone to speak English?
It had nothing to do with England at all.
I will respond to her reply when I get back from our family walk/run.

So why the push to speak English only way back in the early days of last century, and not only in the Quebec area?

Yes. Just get it out of the way instead of dragging it on for Lord knows how long.

Why? The way some people are talking, I'm getting so tired of hearing about this. Seems like life will never go back to normal.

It may take a while. You're just going to have to stay patient and sane.

There is no push in Canada to speak English. We have two official languages - English and French. My children have taken French since grade 1 and can communicate well in both languages. Our Prime Minister usually also can communicate in both languages (however there is no official rule on this). The issue in Quebec was the FLQ was a radical group wanting separation of Quebec from the rest of the country, the FLQ wanted inmates released from prison who represented their front. This is a good explanation of it.

It’s a really interesting story - Quebec separatists, the FLQ, were escalating bombings in the Montreal area. They eventually kidnapped the Deputy Premier and a British diplomat, killing the Deputy Premier. The Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau (father of current PM Justin) invoked the War Measures Act, the only peacetime use of it.

Maybe when Canada was being colonized and there was basically a battle between the French and the British to claim territory.. but not recently, that I can recall anyway.

This was all in the mid 1750's, particularly from 1755 to 1765. There was fighting between the invading British and French along with the native population. The various native tribes has alignments with both the British and French.
