They were talking about this on the radio. Ten, twenty+ years ago the Oscars were a huge deal, there wasn't much competition of other things to watch and what little programming there was typically aired reruns that night. Now there's just a saturation of other content, not to mention the way we consume media has changed so much. All scheduled programming has been on the decline, as On-Demand streaming increases. Also, awards shows in general have been losing viewership; they have always been kind of boring in general and these days you can just look up the winners of the categories you care about online, as well as catching all the other stuff you might care about (what people were wearing, interviews, performances etc) in clip form without having to watch the whole thing.

This year's State of the Union address had an even bigger drop in viewers. People are getting political burnout.
