ABC's politically charged Oscar telecast averaged 23.6 million viewers on Sunday night, the smallest audience ever, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

THR noted that total was “well below the 29.56 million and 7.7 for last year's awards,” and down 20 percent in year-to-year viewers. The Oscars managed a 5.3 rating in the key demographic of adults age 18-49, down 31 percent from last year’s 7.7 demo rating.

The lengthy, host-less broadcast fell almost 2 million viewers short of the previous all-time low, when the Oscars averaged 26.54 million viewers back in 2018.

Millionaires who are completely out of touch with regular people and who have no moral compass. No one needs to applaud their nonsense.

I heard there were a lot of political comments.

On a funny side note.....I read an article about Harry and Meghan’s trip to FL to speak at a banking dinner. Supposedly Harry was the keynote speaker? It gushed how they bonded almost instantly with J Lo and Alex. It mentioned maybe they’d be asked to be presenters at the Oscars. *The Post reports that the couple could 'possibly appear on stage as presenters for either Best Film or Documentary' at the awards show, set to be held on Sunday night.* (I guess we were expected to believe that could be arranged in a week. LOL)

Alas I didn’t hear they made it there. Today I saw a headline saying “Hello!” magazine was told that Harry and Meghan were asked to present the Oscar for best picture but had to turn it down. They certainly seem to have mastered the planting of gossip items to keep themselves in the news.

The Oscars were on? Show how much I care for the soapboxing of out of touch stars.

At one time, the Academy Awards were fun to watch as were many other award shows. They were glamorous and for a short time...the length of the televised show....you got to feel that you were a small part of their world.

Today, I have just lost all interest. Yes, a part of it are the political speeches which are far more frequent than they once were. In fact, you just really seldom heard about a celebrity's politics, especially when it came time to winning an award, and going up on stage to thank people.

I'm not surprised that the viewing percentages are done. I do think a part of it might has to do with these almost expected political speeches (now) upon winning some of them give. But too, there are far more options on TV now than ever before.

It's just the opportunity for the super wealthy to feel that they're "victims" even as they stand behind the Velvet Rope, a safe distance from the riff raff, whose lives they so often champion on film, while staying quarantined from them in real life.

I used to watch the award shows, especially for music, but stopped when they started using that platform to express their political views. I watched for the entertainment value. If I want political opinions, I can turn the tv channel to FOX or CNN. It has been so long since I last watched an awards show, I don’t even pay attention to when they are on. Plus, any more those shows go on forever.

I agree. There have always been celebrities taking advantage of their fame to spew their personal political views. I find that ridiculous because their opinion really shouldn’t carry more weight or be considered more worthy of attention. Usually, it’s quite the contrary. But awards ceremony were sort of off limits to that and now it seems it’s their platform to promote whatever PERSONAL views they hold. Nobody cares, or at least, nobody should care. Being able to act, sing, or dance doesn’t make anyone more educated about the affairs of the world and it certainly doesn’t give them a better understanding of them. They should go up, thank the people who got them there (and not forget their spouse, lol) pretend they’re surprised and feel they don’t deserve it (after all, they supposedly can act if they won, right?) and get down.

Well, that's pretty much how I feel when it comes to these shows and political viewpoints.

It's not that I feel celebrities should keep their political and social opinions to themselves. But why be so polarizing while people in the audience HAVE TO listen because you've won and you're now on the stage? Kwim?

Honestly, too and with respect to music award shows, I feel out of the loop. Many a time has come when we used to watch the different music award shows that I'd find myself asking my kid's..."who the heck is that," and subsequently feeling older than dust. lol

I can't remember which awards show it was....the Emmy's, maybe? But this goes back to 2017 IIRC, and a camera went around the room to various celebrities, allowing them to basically tell Trump and his supporters off.

I just found it off-putting and a little egotistical. I suppose that some could say that with Trump being an ego maniac quite often (which he can be), he had it coming. But not then. Not at that show.

I think Ricky Gervais nailed it at the Golden Globes this year, I think it was, which it came to acceptance speeches.
