They didn’t voluntarily pay it back. Residents were publicly vocal and then the Queen issued a declarative statement that they will pay it back.

I’ll stick with classifying this as being forced.

Good for them. It's not easy to leave such a high profile existence, especially when one is born into it. I wish them success. Why wouldn't everyone?

IOW you have absolutely no idea what their intentions were or what occurred in a closed door discussion you were not privy to, so you’ll go with presenting your entirely uninformed assumptions as fact. interesting choice.

The tiles that I, and the article, were referring to is “HRH” or “HIS/Her Royal Highness” not Duke or Duchess. At first it was reported the HRH were taken away. It was not, but they may no longer use it since they will not be carrying out royal duties.

When Diana and Charles divorced, HRH was taken away from her and she was known as Diana, Princess of Wales instead of Her Royal Highness Diana, Princess of Wales.
moviestar wrote: Sun Jan 19, 2020 8:22 pm Duke and Duchess are still royal titles.

It’s not only the right following the story, just only the right that seems to want to trash the couple, Meghan especially.
DSamuels wrote: Sun Jan 19, 2020 4:33 pm Yes, I did read the article. I used the title that was posted at the time. It’s changed a bit to this now

“Harry, Meghan to quit royal jobs, give up ‘highness’ titles”

It looks like the article has been updated too, but the main points remain the same.

They are no longer considered “senior royals” or “working royals” and no longer represent the queen. I don’t know what good a title you aren’t “allowed” to use anymore is.

I can’t speak for anyone else but I have followed the royal family since Charles and Diana’s engagement and wedding. I didn’t realize only “the right” was following the story. Feel free to find another thread more to your liking.
moviestar wrote: Sun Jan 19, 2020 1:04 pm Did you even read your own article? they are still royal. They’re still Duke and Duchess, he’s still a prince. They haven’t even been stripped of the highness titles, they just wont use them.

the movements of another country’s royals is among the weirdest things the right has been getting all frothy about lately. is it because Meghan is open in her dislike of donald?

Were they refusing to pay taxpayers back?
If they had stayed as senior royals they would not have been expected to pay it back. I wonder if Harry and Meghan discussed this or if it was presented to him as one of the requirements.
The article says agreement so I would think there was some discussion around it and the couple probably knew to expect some of this before the decision was made.

I was wondering if they refused and had to be forced to do it since I haven’t kept up with it in detail.
The thing I heard/saw was the statement saying they agreed. There was also an article before Harry met with the queen, Charles and William that Meghan was going to “dial in” for the meeting. Afterwards it came out due to security, who else might have been with or it being recorded were the reasons mentioned, that she did not. Very quickly after that the Duchess of Sussex, or “her people” released a statement saying that she was not barred from dialing in but that she and Harry didn’t feel it was necessary.

With dueling stories it could make you wonder if they didn’t want her on the phone at all, but wanted the discussion to be between Harry and the family without her input. I’m probably wrong, but just a feeling I get.

The queen told whoever of her staff that handles stuff like this to work it out fast. I’m sure there was some give and take on both sides. The queen, as the head of the monarchy and family would need to come out as the person with final say in the whole thing.
