Sigh.
There is a vast difference between Socialism and a Government sponsored social program or a local government collecting money from taxes to pay for (say) infrastructure improvements (say) on bridges.
I thought you understood this.
Americans are still the only democratic country in the world who has a portion of citizens who fear the word socialism.
Bernie Sanders :
“What democratic socialism essentially means to me is completing the vision that Franklin Delano Roosevelt started some 85 years ago, and that is to go forward in the wealthiest country in the history of the world and guarantee a decent economic standard of living in life for all of our people,” he said. “And to do that, obviously we have to combat oligarchy and the incredibly unfair and unequal distribution of wealth and income, and to take on the incredible political power that the 1 percent have.”
The policies Mr. Sanders supports — like single-payer health care, free public college, and higher taxes on the wealthy to fund safety-net programs — are also standard in social democracies.

There are extremists on both sides. The extreme left minority thinks all government is evil. The extreme right minority thinks the government is evil too but in a different way. In between the extremists there's room for democratic socialist. And it has nothing to do with the government taking over private anything.
There is a difference between Democratic Socialism, Socialism and Capitalism.
Keep up.
Wow. That’s news to me!
There are no successful 100% socialist countries or 100% capitalist countries. The biggest winners of more socialist programs are the middle class.
Right now the poor receive Medicaid and the rich buy into private doctor plans where people pay doctors a large monthly fee and the doctor only accepts a small amount of patients. The middle class struggle with yearly increases in medical bills with no solution in site.
Right now daycare is subsidized for the poor and the rich have no problem paying $1,000 per week for daycare. The middle class struggle with tuition.
Right now poor kids get college grants and financial aid. Rich can pay $60,000 per year no problem. It’s the middle class that take out all the student loans.
But somehow a whole lot of families making under $250,000 per year think they are coming after their money. In reality they would benefit the most.
