Is it wrong to rehome the dog
We got the dog 3 years ago. It is the worst mistake of my life. The people lied aboutt the breed. I would never have gotten this dog if I had known. I took it to the vet and they confirmed that every thing we had been told was a lie. I wanted to give the puppy to a shelter at this point. She was too young and definitely the wrong kind of dog for our family. Dh and the kids all loved her at this point and said no.
She has been nothing but problems. She barks at everything and everyone. She breaks and ruins all toys in minutes. She has destroyed my garden so many times. She has a huge run, but the kids let her loose in the main part and she goes right to digging up all my plants. Any kids toys, tools, shoes in her reach are ruined. She got into the garage once and went to town in there. Dh lost camping gear, tools, even wood.
She has gotten much worse since we lost our other dog. She goes on 5 mile runs everyday with ds. She gets tons of exercise. She bolts out the gate or door if she can
It takes hours to get her back because it's a game to her. I am so stressed from trying to keep her in the house, quiet and not destroying everything. I can't relax around the dog. She barks when we leave and we have had animal control called. We get a huge fine next time. The vet has given us tranquilizer for her. They don't do anything to her. He maxed the dose and nothing. We have tried so many medications for her. She has been to vets and trainers. Nothing helps.
I walked out today and she had gotten my garden again. I broke down crying. I just can't with the dog. I feel bad because ds loves her. It's the only redeeming thing about the dog. She sleeps with him and goes on nightly runs.
At what point do you give up and get rid of the dog? I hate the dog. I only take care of it because I have to. I dislike what I have become. I knew this would happen at the beginning when I found out what she was and I didn't follow my gut feelings and get rid of it when it was a puppy. I know it's my fault, but I can't live like this anymore.

One of the biggest misconceptions about dogs is that walking them helps keep their energy in check. Walking dogs makes them more fit which makes them stronger and more energetic. If you have a dog who already has a lot of energy, walking will not reduce their energy or wear them out, it's just conditioning which gives them more stamina.
The dog doesn't need to be exhausted, they need mental stimulation. They're bored. Most families aren't able to dedicate enough time to give a dog like yours the kind of stimulation they need, especially if you/hubs are working and kids are in school.
Sounds to me like this dog could be a working breed and would be better suited with a family who will work them, or with single people who have more time to give to entertaining and training their dog.

It's some kind of hound. No clue what kind. The vet offered to do a DNA test to find out.RIZZY wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 2:09 pm One of the biggest misconceptions about dogs is that walking them helps keep their energy in check. We got a big song and dance from the guy who sold us our dog. Said she was a poodle-pom mix - haha, def not. Said she was seven weeks old and weaned, also no! When we got her home she still had no teeth - so like three weeks old and not on solid food. She grew like crazy and is now huge (hubs says medium).
Luckily she is smart and good natured and only a pain in half my ass, so I think we keep her.
If your misfit dog is creating that much trouble, it's a kindness to rehome, and you can get a dog more like what you want. New doggie will sleep and run with ds just fine.

If you've tried everything then there's nothing wrong with finding a suitable home for her. Please don't just dump her at a shelter, though. There are organizations that specialize in rehoming special needs breeds. Find an organization that specializes in hounds or working dogs.Anonymous 1 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 1:28 pm We got the dog 3 years ago. It is the worst mistake of my life. I would worry more about your son would think about getting rid of the dog… would that be heartbreaking for him?
He is the only reason that I haven't gotten rid of the dog. He is gone from 4:30 in the morning until 7 at night most days. I know he loves her, but he isn't the one that has to deal with her all day.Slimshandy wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 2:51 pm I would worry more about your son would think about getting rid of the dog… would that be heartbreaking for him?

We have a dog that is said to be Lab-American Leopard Cur-American Bulldog. You want energy, it is non stop with this guy, I can go on a 5k run turn around and hand him do DD and she can do the same and he does not even break a sweat, he would be looking around for the next person to take him.
For our dog he loves to be put to work, so twice a week we are off to agility courses in our area to stimulate him, he also does fast CAT races. He loves it and it calms him down, as opposed (like yours does as well) run around ripping out my zucchini plants from the garden. The other thing he loves is swimming, that again calms him down, luckily we have a pool and he is allowed in it when someone else is in it he could probably swim for hours if we let him.
You need to find a job for him, he needs to be stimulated. It does not have to be at a course like we go to you can do it at home. We will do it some days were his energy level is off the charts. We set up an obstacle course using things around the house. Lawn chairs with a broom across them for example - throw a ball and have him run after it jumping over the broom. Hide and seek in the house, he is downstairs and someone hides. we then tell him to go find them, he happily takes off looking for them. We are constantly stimulating our dog, as with our dog if we just took him a walk/run and left him on his own after that it would be a disaster.

But would he be devastated?Anonymous 1 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 3:01 pmHe is the only reason that I haven't gotten rid of the dog. He is gone from 4:30 in the morning until 7 at night most days. I don't know. He has talked about moving out and getting an apartment with friends. He can't take the dog with him. I thought I could handle the dog until he got a place where he could have her. I can't wait 2 more years for thatSlimshandy wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 3:26 pmBut would he be devastated?Anonymous 1 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 3:01 pmHe is the only reason that I haven't gotten rid of the dog. I know I am devastated that she ruined my garden. I can't even look at the dog. I have fenced a huge part of the yard for her. It was the only way to have a garden. I was crying when I saw what she did. I don't think I can handle being around the dog anymore. All I can think is that she ruined my garden. It was one of my favorite things. I should have known better. I did know better but dh and ds said they would keep her away. I knew the dog would ruin it.
