Just wondering how this works

Does a creator of an item get paid every single time a licensed item of theirs is purchased?

Or does the makers of said item buy the license, and creator doesn't see any additional money after that?

I am guessing it's the latter because say if you buy a song for a dollar from a band that broke up. It's not practical to split that dollar between all members, kwim?

But the case I am talking about is Warner Brothers. I am guessing WB bought the license to make products from the creator and now all money from said product goes to WB, I don't think the creator gets money every single time a licensed item is purchased.

Unless the creator sold the copyright, they would get a portion of any sales in the form of a royalty. Bands that broke up would have made some sort of an agreement as to how royalties would be divided.
