No, you weren't being a jerk at all. I'm surprised at how many people here say that it wouldn't bother them. I'm generally really easy going, but I would find it very rude to be interrupted like that while I'm trying to eat. That's completely unacceptable.

He could have stood by the exit and asked people as they were leaving.

I agree with OP. It's one thing to have a stand outside the doors asking as people go in and out, but to purposefully interrupt them while they're trying to enjoy their meals is rude. Did the restaurant have a "no soliciting" policy? If so, the manager on duty should have stepped up and enforced it.

I wouldn't have bought anything from him either.

I don't even like GS or BS hanging out at stores asking for donations or to buy their stuff.. I would be annoyed by someone asking me to buy a candy bar while sitting down to eat in a restaurant.
