Now… I’m not saying he shouldn’t have been found guilty, he should have and he should have been sentenced to prison time…
But it begs the question…
There’s violent rapists getting 5 years, murderers getting 15 years…
Why are we punishing people with longer sentences for stealing money than we do rape and murder?
Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years…

seven criminal counts against him...
convicted of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud against FTX customers and against Alameda Research lenders, conspiracy to commit securities fraud and conspiracy to commit commodities fraud against FTX investors, and conspiracy to commit money laundering...
He faces a maximum sentence of 115 years in prison.

Why do we punish financial crimes more harshly than violent murder?

A seven time rapist isn't getting off with 25 years.

The average federal sexual crime sentence is longer than the average federal financial fraud or money laundering sentence (links below - they don’t have one for murder, probably because it’s not as common a federal charge). In this case, the scale of Bankman-Fried’s crimes, his continued lying and his lack of remorse got him a very harsh sentence, but that’s not the norm.
