I've sometimes mentioned that mass social media comes with its share of problems. Issues depicted in documentaries like "The Social Dilemma" include media bubbles, data mining, political polarization, and algorithmic engagement bait that leads to radicalization. I also sometimes add, "...but our site is good!" because I just don't see the same issues happening at our scale.

Now Kurzgesagt has a new video with a somewhat different explanation of how social media causes divisions in society. It's worth a look:

The Internet is Worse Than Ever – Now What?

The best part is - spoiler alert! - he explains why small social media sites like ours are really better for people, and more like the original vision of human connection that the internet was supposed to be.

Check it out - I say we should count ourselves very lucky to be here! I sure do.

I could have done without the advert at the end for the sponsoring news website.

But I agree about one of the main ways things gets slanted is way some stories get little or no coverage.

And, yes, some social media algorithms go on what you'll react to by clicking on. So if you click the most on stories with click-bait headline you strongly disagree with, that's what they'll mainly show you.
